History
How We Got Started:
The Security BankUSA Lumberjack Scramble evolved from a discussion by Jim Mergens and Jon Sand to find a way to supplement their athletic budgets
because of lack of funds throughout the School District. Jim then approached John Baer of Security BankUSA about a possible sponsorship
for a fundraising golf tournament. John Baer, who has always been a strong community supporter and a third generation community banker
welcomed the opportunity to be the sponsor of the event. The first Security BankUSA Lumberjack Scramble took place on August 11, 1995.
The Scramble Committee consists of bank officers, school district employees and community members. The proceeds go to the Bemidji Lumberjack
Foundation where funds are allocated for equipment, motivational speakers and other expenses related to our student activities.
The Scramble has turned into a wonderful event with families playing as a team every year and many coming from different parts of the country.
It is also unique in the sense of having mixed teams. Many BHS alumni play in the scramble when they return to Bemidji for their class reunion.
Also student athletes participate as caddies or help out on the course.
2025 marks the 31st Annual Security BankUSA Lumberjack Scramble. To date, we have raised over $1,045,262 for the
Bemidji Lumberjack Foundation. We thank the community and everyone who participates for their past and continued support. Come join us on August 15, 2025 for a
memorable day of golf and friends.
Proceeds from the Lumberjack Scrambleare donated to the Bemidji Lumberjack Foundation and benefit Bemidji High School and
Middle School activities. The tournament started in 1995 and raised more than $65,973 in 2024 and more than $1,045,262 since its inception.
